Arno Kamminga beautifully won the gold in the 100 meter breaststroke at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Otopeni on Thursday. Caspar Corbeau took the bronze in Romania.

Kamminga swam sixth when entering the last 25 meters. Thanks to his characteristic final sprint, he was still the first to finish in a time of 56.52 seconds. Behind the Italian Nicolò Martinenghi (56.57), Corbeau finished third in 56.66.

For Kamminga it is his fourth gold medal at a European Short Course Swimming Championships, a discipline that is not Olympic. The Katwijker became European champion in 2019 in the 100 meters and 200 meters breaststroke. He won the other titles in the relay numbers. Corbeau won his first individual medal.

“I am very happy. This shows that I am back and can win,” said Kamminga, who went through a deep depression last year due to mental and physical problems. A silver medal last summer at the World Short Course Swimming Championships underlined that Kamminga could once again compete with the best swimmers.

It is the first gold medal for the Dutch team at the European Short Course Championships, which last until December 10. The Dutch women’s relay team missed out on a medal in the 4×50 meter medley. Kira Toussaint, Tes Schouten, Tessa Giele and Valerie van Roon finished fourth.

Earlier in the day, Schouten swam a Dutch record in the 200 meter breaststroke. She finished in 2.16.98. With this, she fell well below her own top time of 2.18.19, which she swam during the World Short Course Championships last year.
