The dream of Junior Oberto it became reality. One of the best pitchers who have worn the red and white jersey in the last fifteen years has become the manager of Spirulina Becagli, which will begin the Serie A season on April 26th, with the aim of regaining its place at the national top.
«When I realized that my career was about to end – said the 43-year-old Oberto during the presentation which took place on Tuesday morning in the press room “Fabrizio Masini” at Jannella – after having played the World Baseball Classic at 37 years old I began to think that I could lend a hand to the boys of BBC Grosseto. Being here is an incredible emotion, like when a child is born.”
The coach from Barquisiemento (Venezuela), with grandparents from Ferrara, has been in Maremma since 2006 (after five years in the Phillies’ Minors and three seasons in Bollate) and knows the environment well: «When I arrived there were all from Grosseto, splendid people like Riccardo De Santis, the flag of my generation. I want to work to improve the group and make it become a family, like it once was; everyone must play for the club, then for the coach.”
«Being the manager of Grosseto is an honor, people have always loved me, both when I played and when I stopped. We want to show that we can return to Grosseto at the age of 15 – he adds as he takes a photo out of his pocket of him climbing the net to celebrate – to the 2007 scudetto won in front of 8,000 fans. I want to bring those people back to the baseball stadium with kids from Grosseto, with kids who deserve a second chance, with kids who will follow me in this experience and who love this sport as much as I do.”
«Last year it didn’t go as we hoped because the players arrived late, but that’s not an excuse, because they had to arrive ready. Some training and presence on the pitch were missing: there were five coaches and four players. Sports director Filippo Olivelli is working to expand the squad and from next weekend we will take to the pitch to prepare for the new season with an adequate number of players. I have a perfect team suitable for the Italian championship, ready for three seven-inning games. I have to thank the club, Sandro Chimenti, Claudio Banchi and Filippo Olivelli, who gave me the opportunity for believing in my idea of improving the level of play; but also thanks to my employer, who said he was proud that I became the manager of the BBC Grosseto, and to my friends.”

«From this perspective – adds Banchi – the fact that BSC is in group A, like us, is also important: between both of us we can do a job of bringing the public closer together, because every week there will be a match to watch against Parma , Bologna, San Marino, Macerata or the derby. At a program level it is a change of pace.”
Oberto was also there at the presentation of Junior Beppe Massellucci, the greatest player in the history of the club. «His presence fills us with happiness – said Claudio Banchi – Massellucci returned to his house to prepare a program together with the club to restart the draft, to bring kids back to baseball. «Oberto’s choice is excellent – said Beppe Massellucci, the BBC’s home run record holder (124) – it’s a home run choice. I have followed Junior for many years, he is a serious person and for a coach he is everything. Victories depend on many factors, but seriousness and enthusiasm are fundamental.”
