Jokubaitis unblocks Barça against Covirán Granada

Rokas Jokubaitis, who scored 14 of his 20 points in the last quarter, unstuck Barça this Sunday (80-69) against the tenacity of Covirán Granada in an even match, with a low pace and marked due to the mistake of both groups.

It was a match without continuity in the game, in part due to the excessive prominence of the referees, who expelled the visitor Thomasson with an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical in the third quarter, and signaled three other technicals in a duel without too many frictions.

Without the American escort, Kwan Cheatham (17 points) took a step forward in Covirán Granada, who took the lead in the last quarter (65-66, min.35), but the final emergence of Jokubaitis, who acted as an agitator in the absence of Nico Laprovittola, decided the match.

The first quarter was marked by inaccuracies, with 8 losses for the local team and 7 for the visitor. Covirán Granada quickly punished Barça’s mistake in shooting (2-8, min.4), which did not improve with the entry of the second unit (6-15, min.9).

Denied in attack, the Barça team tightened the screws in defense, gained confidence thanks to the control of the rebound and reversed the disadvantage driven by the goals of Hernangómez and Parker in the paint, added to the penetrations by Jokubaitis and Paulí (28-25, min.27).

All in all, Covirán Granada withstood the push supported by Kramer’s wrist and the interior presence of Felicio, authors of 10 and 7 points respectively at halftime (35-31).

The tie remained in a third quarter of streaks. Barça opened the gap through Da Silva and Vesely (43-35, min.24), but the Andalusian team reacted thanks to Thomasson (43-43, min.25) and forced Grimau to time out.

The wake-up call had no effect. The Covirán Granada, even weighed down by the expulsion of Thomassontook the lead with six points in a row from Cheatham (52-54, min.29) and the duel was tied until the last round (54-54).

The match gained in intensity as the end approached. Two triples from Cheatham and two more from Costa put the Andalusian team ahead, but Barça responded led by Jokubaitis, author of 14 points in the fourth, and tightened the defense in the final stretch to secure the victory (80-69).
