Jan Siewert remains coach at Mainz 05

FSV Mainz 05 continues to rely on coach Jan Siewert in the Bundesliga relegation battle and has given the 41-year-old a contract until 2026. The club announced this on Friday, the “Bild” newspaper had previously reported. Siewert took over the position after Bo Svensson’s resignation at the beginning of November, after previously coaching Mainz’s U23s.

On Thursday he presented his rescue plan to sports director Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt. “We are convinced that with Jan Siewert we will achieve our sporting goal of staying in the league and that we have made the best decision for Mainz 05,” said Heidel in the statement.

“He knows the club and is passionate about this task”

Siewert gave the team positive impulses. “He also enjoys great support from the team and staff, he knows the club and is passionate about this task,” added Heidel. In the past few weeks, many professionals have already spoken out in favor of further collaboration with Siewert.

“I am very happy about the trust the club has shown, which I have already felt in the past few weeks,” said the coach. “We have a common task ahead of us for our club. I am sure that with the quality of the team, our team spirit and solidarity with our fans and within the club, we will be able to cope with this task.”

After 16 match days, Mainz are in 16th place with ten points – tied with their rivals 1. FC Köln and Darmstadt 98 in the direct relegation places. Under Siewert, the 05ers had collected seven points from seven games. In the last game of the year there was a respectable 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
