Izumo Children’s Baseball Festa 2023, an event for young children to enjoy baseball with high school baseball players, was held on the 9th at Izumo Dome in Yano-cho, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. The event was sponsored by the Prefectural High School Baseball Federation in hopes of increasing the number of baseball players in the future and to get young children familiar with baseball.
This is the fourth time this year. Approximately 100 children brought by their parents from around Izumo City participated in the morning session. Participants toured five booths themed around hitting, throwing, and catching, and tried their hand at throwing balls into buckets and hitting targets depicting popular anime characters by hitting balls placed on top of cones. Baseball team members from five high schools around the city helped out, calling out things like “nice ball.”
Yuma Sugitani, 5, a student in the Izumo City Year-Grade Class, said, “It was fun to pick up the bat and hit the ball.I want to hit (the ball) far away.” Tsumugi Fujie (6), a student in the city’s senior class, is participating for the second year in a row. She said, “I enjoyed throwing the ball. It made me want to play (baseball).” Her younger sister, Hono (4), who is a member of the younger group, also said, “It was fun to throw.” (Kazuhiko Ishikawa)
