Not just the Bundesliga and cup: from next season onwards, women in football will be aiming for another title.
The footballers in Germany will fight for another title in the future. The Presidium of the German Football Association (DFB) decided on Thursday to introduce the Women’s Super Cup. The new competition will be held from the 2024/2025 season. The German champions and the winners of the DFB Cup from the previous season should take part.
If the champions were also the DFB Cup winners, the second place in the Bundesliga table would move up. The hosting method provides for a neutral venue that changes every year, “in order to transport the accessibility of women’s football to different regions, strengthen the loyalty of existing fans and open up new fans as well as target regions,” as it said in a statement.
The Supercup underlines the growing importance of women’s football: “The implementation of the competition will create a significant national platform to further increase the visibility and further professionalize women’s football.” The DFB Women’s Supercup last took place between 1992 and 1997.
