In Season Tournament: The fight for the “NBA Cup”: How does the new tournament work? The rules, the mode, all dates and awards

For the first time in NBA history, there will be a cup competition during the season – the In-Season Tournament. We explain what it is all about and how it works.

Commissioner Adam Silver has been working toward this for years, and now it’s here. In the 2023/24 season, the In-Season Tournament will be held for the first time, in which all 30 NBA teams will take part.

The winning team will receive the so-called “NBA Cup”. The Final Four will take place in Las Vegas, with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Indiana Pacers contesting the final on Sunday night.

NBA In-Season Tournament: The Mode

Following the example of European football competitions, there is initially a group phase. The 30 teams compete against each other in six groups of five. Each team gets two home and away games. The games still count as part of the regular season, but are played on so-called “Tournament Nights”.

The six group winners qualify for the semi-finals, plus the two best runners-up. The higher seeded team then has home advantage in the round of the last eight, while the semi-finals and final will be played in Las Vegas. The knockout games also count as part of the regular season – the only exception is the final.
