II Edition of International Basketball Tournament in Ávila: A Prelude to the Spanish Championship for U14 and U16 Autonomous Teams

Ávila will serve as a prelude and last stop in the preparation of the Spanish Championship of U14 and U16 Autonomous Basketball Teams with the celebration of the II edition of the International Basketball Tournament, which will meet on the CUMCarlos Sastre parquet –December 28 and 29– to the regional elections of Castilla y León, Asturias and Oporto in the case of the Children’s category and to the regional teams of Castilla y León, the Canary Islands and the Portuguese National Team in the Cadet category. All this in a tournament that will be completed with a training day.

«Since Raúl Álvarez is in charge of the Provincial Delegation, I have done nothing but come to Ávila. “It didn’t exist before.” These were the words with which Óscar Castañeda, president of the FBCYL, supported the work being carried out in this sport in the lands of Avila, taking advantage of the presentation of a tournament “which will be a way to finalize the preparation of our regional teams, which next “In the month of January, the Spanish Children’s and Cadet Championships of Regional Teams will be held in Huelva.” Ávila will put an end to “the preparation that has been carried out over two years with these teams.” An international tournament “that went very well last year” and this year comes with the feeling of having taken one more “step.” Because for Raúl Álvarez, Provincial Basketball Delegate, “having a national team or teams as powerful as the Canary Islands come is always a luxury,” he commented before an event “that is very good to promote basketball both in Ávila capital and in the province.”

It will be played at the CUMCarlos Sastre starting on Thursday, December 28 at 5:00 p.m. with the Asturias – Porto (U14) match and at 7:00 p.m. with the Canary Islands – Portugal (U16) match. It opens on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the match Castilla y León – Porto (U14), at 12:00 p.m. Castilla y León -Portugal (U16), at 4:00 p.m. Castilla y León -Asturias (U14) and at 6:00 p.m. Castilla y León -Canarias (6:00 p.m.).

A tournament that also comes with an important training component. “In the heat of the tournament, as we already did in the first edition, we are going to have training for referees and coaches and we are going to do it jointly,” explained Diego Valdegrama, secretary of the Castilian and Leonese Association of Basketball Coaches. It will be an edition that will deal with “the technical-tactical advantages of knowledge of the regulations”, for which they will have the experience of Esperanza Mendoza, international referee of the Castilian and Leonese school, and Jorge Valiente, one of the young coaches of Castilla y León in orbit of the Spanish National Team in lower categories. It will be held at the Ciudad Deportiva on Thursday morning – from 11:00 am – with a more theoretical first part and a more practical second part.

A tournament for everyone, for fans but also for those who want to participate in the training day. “We encourage all referees, coaches and fans who want to see these types of formations to come forward.”
