Igor Wandtke Honored with Lower Saxony Sports Medal for Outstanding Achievements

The Lower Saxony Sports Medal is the highest sporting award in the state of Lower Saxony. It has been established since 1984 as a symbol of recognition for services to sport through outstanding personal sporting achievements as well as through the promotion and dissemination of sport. The Prime Minister awards them annually to individuals, teams or sports clubs on the recommendation of a jury.

This year Igor Wandtke was honored for his entire sporting career and successes. “Particularly mentioned were the title of European team champion with the German team and of course the bronze medal with the German mixed team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” says Christian Bebek, Vice President of Competitive Sports in the Lower Saxony Judo Association. Igor Wandtke only really became aware of the importance of this award, which is given to a maximum of three active athletes and a maximum of three active young athletes each year, on site. “It is a special award and honor and I am very proud of it,” he says, pleased about such a high honor from the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stefan Weil. “In the laudatory speech, I was affectionately described as the driving force of Lower Saxony’s sport over the last ten years. That really touched me.”

Igor Wandtke is the sixth judoka to receive this award since 2000. After Anja von Rekowski (2000, vice world champion in 1997), Julia Matijass (2005, Olympic bronze medalist in 2004), Pauline Starke in 2017, Giovanna Scoccimarro in 2018 and Tim Gramkow in 2019 received the medal as a young talent prize.
