German Judoka at Grand Slam Tokyo: Mixed Results on Day One and Looking Ahead to Day Two

The three German starters on the first day of the Grand Slam in Tokyo did not achieve any placement. Eduard Trippel (JC Rüsselsheim – HE, -90 kg) however, that he can still be expected in the Olympic qualification. He wins two fights against Mongolian Dagvadorj Tserendulam and Cuban Ivan Felipe Silva Morales. In the pool final against the Korean Doughan Gwak, both go into the Golden Score without a score. However, after eight minutes of fighting time, Eduard Trippel lost with Ippon and thus lost a round too early to get into the placement area. “Of course I won’t be happy if I don’t win a medal. But my goal was actually to definitely win a fight because I haven’t fought in such a long time and my injury hasn’t completely healed yet,” he said after the competition. “In the third fight against the Korean I noticed that my condition was not yet in top shape. “It was difficult in the Golden Score,” is how he assesses the situation. Nevertheless, he won some points for the Olympic rankings by winning two fights. “I think I’ve found my way into the competition well and I need more competition routine. I hope that the next competitions will be better and I still have some time until then.”
