Former President Macri’s Critique of Boca Juniors Election and Management

From Saudi Arabia, former president Mauricio Macri wrote his message of electoral defeat in Boca Juniors, although he does not make it his own and criticizes the management of Juan Román Riquelme, who was elected president by 65.3 percent of the votes, in an election in which 46,402 members participated, a historical record for Argentine soccer.

“Thank you to everyone who went to vote yesterday with respect and love for Boca,” wrote Macri, who did not go to vote, but did pressure his ally, President Javier Milei, to do so, which meant he earned catcalls and boos from the members at La Bombonera.

Macri’s message on social networks does not mention the overwhelming electoral result in favor of the Riquelme-Ameal formula, 65.3% over the 34.4% of the votes obtained by the duo made up of him as vice and his former minister of Modernization Andrés Ibarra as a presidential candidate. Nor does the participation of 46,402 members stand out, a national record and second worldwide, behind an election in Barcelona, which attracted 57 thousand members.

“Our beloved club has its institutional growth at risk today. And the way in which yesterday’s election took place only confirmed it,” Macri’s text begins, referring to the judicial maneuvers through which – with partner judges of Boca and with a political relationship with the PRO—managed to suspend the elections, scheduled for December 2, and after a contrary ruling from the Buenos Aires Civil Chamber, which ordered them to be held, he insisted that 13 thousand members that he questioned, will vote differentiated. On a rainy day, the historic participation of the fans put Macri’s defeat at 14,450 votes.

“I can’t help but remember the day when that young man signed with Boca in 1996. An institution with values, orderly and professional, gave him, together with a great team, the opportunity to get where he got,” Macri dedicated to Riquelme, without mentioning him. ; and then continued with a criticism of the leadership of the club’s historical idol as vice president and head of Football in the last four years: “I hope that in this new period he connects with the greatness of Boca and also with the humility of knowing that he is in “a club with more than 100 years of history and glory. That knows how to correct the arbitrary and personal way of running the club. Boca always has to be above everything and everyone.”

The last phrase, demanding a less personal leadership from Riquelme, echoes in a former president who decided to run as a candidate for vice president of the club that catapulted him into the world of politics only after Boca lost the final of the Copa Libertadores, which did everything possible for suspending the elections and was absent from yesterday’s election. That absence, as leaked, cost him a call from President Javier Milei. The president agreed to join forces in favor of Macri and run in the elections, delaying his trip to Bahía Blanca where a natural tragedy occurred with 13 deaths. Furthermore, during his time at La Bombonera he earned dissing songs, whistles and criticism.

To the overwhelming election of the xeneizes partners to validate Riquelme’s management as vice president and give him the responsibility of the presidency, Macri analyzed it in his own way: “Without institutional rules, without professionalism and without transparency in decisions, it will be very difficult for us to return to be one of the 5 great clubs in world football”.

Finally, the former president greeted his running mate whom he left alone on the afternoon of the elections: “Thanks to Andrés for leading our proposal to put management to passion and thanks to all those who went to vote yesterday with respect and love for Boca. We will continue caring and working for our beloved club. Let’s go Boca!”
