Football: Nice’s Hugo Lloris leaves Tottenham to join Los Angeles FC

French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, 37, terminated his contract with Tottenham, whose colors he had worn since 2012, to join the American franchise Los Angeles FC, we learned on Saturday December 30 from a source close to the negotiations.

The north London club, of which he captained for eight years, will pay tribute to the 2018 world champion in his presence before Sunday’s championship match at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT) against Bournemouth at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The former Nice and Lyon player had been kept away from the group since last summer, after expressing the wish to discover “something else” after eleven seasons in London. The team, led by Ange Postecoglou, had recruited Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and entrusted the armband to South Korean striker Heung-Min Son.

145 selections for the French team

Lloris’ last club appearance was on April 23. He was then replaced at half-time in the heavy 6-1 defeat against Newcastle in the Premier League, injured in a thigh. This physical problem caused him to miss the entire end of last season.

The former international with 145 caps (French record), retired from the France team since the 2022 World Cup final lost against Argentina, has signed up for at least one season with Los Angeles FC, finalist of the last MLS championship.

The American franchise counts in its ranks captain Carlos Vela and Denis Bouanga, a Gabonese striker who notably played for Saint-Etienne.
