Football: Maradona’s son fired from his coaching position in Italy

“There are times in life when everything is unfair…” Diego Armando Maradona Junior did not hide his disappointment when announcing, on his Instagram account, his dismissal from FC Pompei. Son of Diego Maradona, the Italian-Argentinian has coached the Italian fifth division club since June 2023.

“Thank you to my boys for their commitment and their seriousness, thank you to my staff who have always supported me. Now all these people who never wanted me in Pompei are happy. But they will never take away my dream of seeing these boys succeed,” he wrote on social media.

Before being fired by Pompeian management, Diego Maradona Junior had led the team to second place in his group in Eccellenza Regionale (Italian D5), a semi-professional championship. It was his second experience as a coach, after a first two-year stint at Napoli United, again in the fifth division.

Born Diego Armando Sinagra in 1986 following an extramarital relationship between Diego Maradona and an Italian woman, Cristiana Sinagra, he was recognized as the son of Diego Maradona in 1993. He then took his name. Like his father – who died in 2020 – he followed a football career, but did not enjoy the same success. The Neapolitan by birth has never played in a division higher than Serie D, Italy’s fourth division. He then converted to beach soccer, where he made 15 caps with Italy, and notably scored in a World Cup final lost against Brazil.
