Five of the six seeds that played on the second day of the Montevideo Open went to the second round, while the remaining two local tennis players were eliminated.

The only pending favorite is María Lourdes Carle, fifth seed, who was winning 5-3 against the Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova when it started to rain and it was decided to postpone the end of the match.

The triumphs of Diane Parry, first seeded, 94th in the world and winner of the tournament in 2021, Renata Zarazúa, from Mexico, and second favorite, stood out.

In addition, Julia Riera (Argentina, 4), Miriam Bulgaru (Romania, 6) and Solana Sierra (Argentina, 7) were placed in the next round.

The Swiss Ylena in-Albon also won, trained for nine years by the Uruguayan Gonzalo Vitale, who has lived in Switzerland for a quarter of a century.

As a counter-match, Carolina Alves, a Brazilian player who lived in Uruguay for five years and was coached by Enrique Pérez Cassarino, was eliminated.

Local tennis players Juliana Rodríguez and Lucía de Santa Ana were defeated by Ekaterina Gorgodze (Georgia) and Gabriela Lee (Romania), respectively.

Gorgodze was a finalist in the 2022 edition of the WTA tournament, which distributes $115,000 in prizes and is one of the most important in South America.

Adding experiences

Juliana Rodríguez decided to settle in Argentina to enhance her career, and her participation in the Montevideo Open is part of that growth.

“I am very happy with what the year has left me. I am living in Argentina, training hard and I already won my first point as a professional,” Rodríguez said.

The light blue player has faced very tough rivals. In 2022 she debuted against Timea Babos and in 2023 against Gorgodze, but she feels that this Tuesday’s match was the best in the tournament that is played on the Carrasco Lawn Tennis courts.

“It’s the one I enjoyed the most, at times I felt like I could play him as an equal,” he explained.

He came back for pleasure

“I came back because this tournament gives me beautiful memories,” said Diane Parry, the first seed at the Montevideo Open 2023, and champion in 2021.

“It is a beautiful city, the club is fantastic and the people are very friendly. I came back because I like the city and the surroundings,” explained the Frenchwoman.

The current 94th in the world had a complicated debut against Amina Anshiba, whom she beat 75 63 after coming back in the first set.

“It was a difficult first match, but I am very happy to participate in this tournament. I will try to improve my tennis to go as far as I can, like two years ago,” he added.

The Nice-born tennis player, who is in the best position of her career, will play in the second round against the Greek Despina Papamichail.

“The year has been long, a lot of trips, it is my fourth week in South America, I am trying to do my best to finish the season in the best possible way,” he indicated.
