Fire at Madison Square Garden: The Knicks and Nuggets Brawl of 2006

Fight – On December 16, 2006, at Madison Square Garden, a general brawl broke out between the Knicks and the Nuggets. Top scorer in the NBA at the time, Carmelo Anthony received a 15-match suspension.

Before joining the Knicks in 2011 after an endless series, Carmelo Anthony was the star player of the Nuggets. A true franchise player supported in particular by JR Smith, and this December 16, 2006, at Madison Square Garden, they will take part in one of the biggest fights in NBA history.

Blows, provocations and an almost general melee which lead to expulsions and suspensions in the Mecca of basketball. And this two years after the infamous fight between the Pacers and the Pistons.

As at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the events occur while the match is over (100-119) and there are only a handful of seconds left to play…

It all starts from a mistake, like two years before…

On a counterattack from JR Smith, Mardy Collins pins the Nuggets back to the ground. Obviously the Nugget immediately reveals himself to explain himself, Carmelo Anthony quickly follows while Nate Robinson insults the two Denver players. An attitude that irritates JR Smith, who jumps on him and the clash moves to the first rows of Madison Square Garden.

A few seconds of madness later, everything seems to have calmed down but Melo, in an excess of stupidity, comes and punches Mardy Collins in the face and then runs away. Jarred Jeffries emerges but many players and coaches hold the winger back so that he does not do worse than Melo.

When everything was almost calm again, the ten players then present on the field were excluded by the referees, including the famous Dick Bavetta. The NBA sanctions did not take long to fall: 47 suspension matches in total, including 15 for Carmelo Anthony.

Twenty-four hours later, Allen Iverson arrives at the Nuggets!

JR Smith and Nate Robinson will be banned from the field for ten matches, Mardy Collins six, Jared Jeffries four, finally Nene and Jerome James will only take one match. The two franchises will receive a bill of 500,000 dollars.

The next day, the Nuggets will make the most spectacular transfer of the season by bringing in Allen Iverson from Philadelphia. Carmelo Anthony, at the time of the incident, was the league’s leading scorer with 31.6 points per game and his image will be tarnished for several weeks. Ironically, he and JR Smith would go on to play for the New York Knicks…
