Two who understand each other: Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has appeared more often recently, initially as an expert for the Tennis Channel at the ATP Finals. And now on a talk show with Piers Morgan. The Australian went really deep into his past. And also where it really hurt.

Kyrgios felt particularly bad after the 2019 Wimbledon tournament. At the time, the man from Canberra even considered suicide.

“It was pretty dark, to be completely honest,” Kyrgios explained in an interview with Morgan. “I was winning tournaments on the professional tour, drinking every night, hurting myself, burning things into my arm, cutting myself just for fun. It has become like an addiction to pain. I hated myself. I hated waking up and being Nick Kyrgios.”

Murray offers Kyrgios help

One man who didn’t go unnoticed by Nick Kyrgios’ problems and who also came to help was Andy Murray. “Andy was a big help to me. As soon as I came on tour he saw that I needed support and he took me under his wing. Later in my career, he realized that I thought I was uncoachable or on my own path, but he was still someone who always looked out for me.”

Murray noticed the injuries that Kyrgios had inflicted on himself and asked: “What is that on your arm?” At that point it was really bad, said Nick Kyrgios. “Andy was obviously trying to give me advice. But I was so set in my ways that I didn’t listen to him. Of course I’m very grateful to him.”
