FIFA threatens to exclude Brazil from international tournaments

Earthquake in Brazilian football. On December 7, the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro dismissed Ednaldo Rodrigues as president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). But it doesn’t stop there because now, two and a half weeks later, the FIFA threatens Brazil to exclude its national teams and clubs to participate in international tournaments if Brazil ends up intervening in its soccer body and leads to the election of a new president in January.

And the highest body in world football understands that this is a political interference that breaks one of the most important laws of FIFA, according to which Governments cannot intervene in national federations.

The Associated Press reports that world soccer’s governing body told a Brazilian soccer executive that CBF could face suspension if he doesn’t heed their call to wait, and instead hold quick elections to replace Ednaldo Rodrigues as president anyway. Furthermore, they claim to have the document in which this event is stated.

Sunday’s letter was signed by Kenny Jean-Marie, director of member associations, and the deputy secretary general of CONMEBOL, Monserrat Jiménez García. FIFA and CONMEBOL, the South American soccer confederation, also said in their letter that they will form a commission to discuss the matter in Brazil on January 8.

FIFA and CONMEBOL wish to strongly emphasize that, until such mission is carried out, no decisions affecting the CBF will be made, including elections or calls for elections. If this is not respected, FIFA will have no choice but to “submit the matter to its relevant decision-making body for consideration and resolution, which could also include a suspension,” the letter states.

For the sake of good order, it must also be stressed that if the CBF were finally suspended by the corresponding FIFA body, you would lose all your membership rights with immediate effect and until FIFA lifts the suspension. This would also mean that CBF representative and club teams would no longer have the right to participate in any international competition while suspended.

The judicial body annulled the election of the president by considering illegal an alteration of the electoral rules that was introduced shortly before the vote, and forced new elections to be called within a period of 30 days. Rodrigues (who can appeal the sentence) has free rein to run again. The president of the Superior Court of Sports Justice, José Perdiz, will be in charge of the administrative routine during that period.
