FIFA announced this Monday a change regarding the entry quotas by ranking for the 2025 Club World Cup. For example, The Conmebol ranking will not be used as a measurement system – it was the one initially stipulated – but rather the FIFA ranking will be taken into account, which has different criteria. In the latter, for example, Boca leads the table and, in second place, River appears. Now, also this very day, The highest entity of South American football published its classification table, in which Xeneize and Millo already occupy different positions…

Unlike the FIFA ranking, In the Conmebol ranking, Palmeiras appears as the leader of the table (9,532 points), in second place is River (8,934) and in third place is Boca (8,817). And if you look at FIFA, Xeneize is the leader with 71 units and CARP is second with 64. But, What are the criteria used in each entity to reach those numbers?

To understand, in the Conmebol ranking, point calculations are made based on two axes: a historical performance of the club in both the Libertadores and the Sudamericana, and the performance of that club in both competitions. Those calculations are added together and yield the final number of points for the table (those 9532, 8934 and 8817 points mentioned above).

And in FIFA, in order to “guarantee the highest possible quality”, fewer accounts are made: A table was directly established that grants three points for a win and one for a tie, in addition to three to play the group stage and another three to advance to the next round in the main draw. All this, of course, in the Libertadores, given that FIFA clarified that only the “first continental competition” will be counted.

In this case, the 2021, 2022 and 2023 editions): The big issue for Boca is that, since Libertadores does not play, it will not be able to add in 2024 and will have to pay attention to what other clubs do to try to keep one of the two places.

And that ranking is the one that will be taken into account for the Club World Cup. So, What is the Conmebol ranking used for? Bueno, to designate the seeds of the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana that are taking place. In this case, this ranking will be used to define who will occupy those places in the 2024 editions of both contests.
