Jaap Veerman, chairman of the Supervisory Board of FC Volendam, has not heard from ‘Team Jonk’ itself that they are resigning. He was surprised by the statement in the media and calls Team Jonk a ‘bv’ within the club.
“We had to hear through the media that Team Jonk is resigning,” Veerman said on Saturday after Volendam’s 0-5 defeat against PEC Zwolle in front of the camera of ESPN. “I have no idea why it was played that way, but it was a clear statement. I think we have to look for a new trainer and another technical director.”
In the statement on Friday evening, technical manager Wim Jonk, technical director Jasper van Leeuwen, training director Ruben Jongkind and head coach Matthias Kohler stated that they are leaving FC Volendam. They are angry about the dismissal of chairman Jan Smit and the board. Moreover, they accuse Veerman of lies.
“I was surprised by that statement. I also did not expect that the entire Team Jonk would resign,” Veerman continued. “But it was a risk to work like this, because Team Jonk was a kind of BV within FC Volendam. We are not going to do that anymore. There will never be a BV within this club again.”
Due to the departure of Jan Smit, the board and Team Jonk, FC Volendam suddenly needs many new people within the organization. Veerman has already started working on this. “We are discussing a new board. It will take a few more days until we have clarity about that.”

We still need to talk to Kohler
The question is whether FC Volendam should also quickly present a new trainer. Despite the announced departure, Kohler was on the bench with final responsibility against PEC on Saturday evening.
“If people have read our statement carefully, you will read that we are going to resign. Not that we have already done so. It also states that we will properly fulfill our duties and transfer them properly,” said Kohler, who emphasized that he has a strong bond with the player group.
Veerman also does not rule out that Kohler will still remain a trainer. “We still have to talk to him. It also depends on the reaction of the players. Do they want to continue with Matthias or not? If not, then not. I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to a player yet.”
After Saturday’s defeat against PEC, Volendam players told how they experience the power struggle and the bickering within the club.
“When you see how it is played through the media, you think: come on, sit together. We don’t know how to proceed and what will happen to us. We don’t even know if we will have a trainer tomorrow,” said striker Robbert Mühren. Captain Damon Mirani said that he feels betrayed by Jonk and Kohler, among others.
