FC Twente fought its way to a 4-2 victory against Excelsior on Friday. A red card from the Rotterdam team helped the home team after a dramatic start.
FC Twente faced a surprising 0-2 deficit within fifteen minutes. After nine minutes, Excelsior scored for the first time when Troy Parrott scored nicely after a deep ball from El Yaakoubi. This was preceded by a careless loss of ball by the home team.
A little later the task became doubly difficult for Joseph Oosting’s team. Sven Nieuwpoort stopped De Grolsch Veste a few minutes later with a header from a corner. Alfons Sampsted just gave the corner away moments before. A dramatic evening seemed to be in the making, but FC Twente received help from an unexpected source.
Arthur Zagré immediately received a red card in the 25th minute after a hard foul on the ankles by Daan Rots. Oosting intervened four minutes later by bringing on Younes Taha and Joshua Brenet in place of Mathias Kjølø and Sampsted.

Supersub Van Wolfswinkel strikes again
Twente hunted for the tying goal and got rewarded just before half time when Manfred Ugalde headed the score 2-1 against the ropes from close range. In the second half ‘De tukkers’ pressed on and were awarded a penalty by referee Ingmar Oostrom after a handball from Nieuwpoort. Ricky van Wolfswinkel stayed cool from the penalty spot: 2-2.
Ten minutes before the end, Van Wolfswinkel provided relief to the home crowd with a header after Ugalde had offered him an opportunity not to be missed. It was already the seventh goal this season as a substitute for the 34-year-old striker. Taha ended the match with a nice goal a few minutes before the end: 4-2.
Thanks to the ultimately big victory over Excelsior’s ten, FC Twente climbs over AZ and is number three in the Eredivisie. The Alkmaarders can take over third place again on Saturday with a victory over Almere City.
