After the goalless draw against Copenhagen in the Champions League during the week, the core business of the Bundesliga is back on the agenda for Thomas Tuchel and FC Bayern. Before Bayern welcome the struggling Unioners under new coach Nenad Bjelica on Saturday (3:30 p.m. in the SPORT1 live ticker), Tuchel spoke at the press conference on Friday.
In addition to the return of three Bayern stars who were recently missing, he also announced Jamal Musiala’s planned squad comeback after his muscle injury. When asked by SPORT1, Tuchel went into detail about the role of Leon Goretzka, whom he praised for his versatility.
Bayern’s head coach raved about Manuel Neuer, who once again addressed Alphonso Davies’ contract situation when asked by SPORT1 and was optimistic, but still sees room for improvement with the young Canadian. Tuchel also spoke about the upcoming World Cup final for the German U17 national team (Saturday, 1 p.m. in the SPORT1 live ticker) and possible rotations in his starting eleven.

“We don’t need that anymore. There was enough time between Friday’s game (against Cologne) and the Copenhagen game. We won’t have any more stress issues until the winter break. We will approach all games in a way that meets our needs. The Manchester game is part of that.”

“I know that we have done something about this from the club. Christoph Freund wished them luck. I don’t want to do this before the finale. That would be too much of a good thing. Winning a final does something to you.”

“He is an absolute regular player for us and knows how much we value him. For me as a trainer it’s relaxing. For me, nothing changes as a result of the contract situation. I have complete trust in Christoph Freund and Jan-Christian Dreesen. He plays at the highest level and still has potential to develop further. That’s why I’m relaxed and have confidence in those responsible at the club. There is still a lot of room for improvement in terms of tactical understanding against the ball and consistency. You always forget how young he is because he plays at such a high level.”

“The rotation we did (against Copenhagen) was forced. Mathys Tel was also allowed to start once out of solidarity, but Leroy Sané will start again tomorrow. There won’t be many surprises in the starting lineup. We have to flip the switch now. The last home games weren’t our best. There was sand in the gears. We have to increase the tempo and play with more grit.”

“We basically moved back from the left ten to the right central defender at Leon the day before the game (against Copenhagen). That also describes its versatility. This cannot be valued highly enough. You can’t do that with a lot of left tens either. It’s a little bit of everything, very versatile. But his best position is when he can use his running strength between the penalty areas and can also make runs into the penalty area. In midfield he played very well in the half-left position and we still see him there. But in central defense he also played very good games every time he played there.”

“There is no limit for Manu. As long as he feels good and holds up the way he does right now. He is in top condition. We don’t put any limits on this. Then he can stand in goal for as long as he wants. He is very impressive at the moment, from the first minute he was back in training. The mix between relaxedness and professionalism is in perfect harmony. He’s at a high level and gets a little better with every game.”
