European swimming championships, shower of medals for Italy

He wanted it at all costs, even giving up the 200m final in which he could have fought for the podium. Nicolò Martinenghi rises to the top of Europe in the 50m breaststroke and in his wake there is an exceptional Simone Cerasuolo for a stunning double. The 24-year-old from Varese and vice world champion, gold in the 4×50 mixed and silver in the 100, triumphed in 25″66, with a very quick passage to the twenty-five in 14″06. And the 20-year-old from Emilia swims in 25″83. Third is the Turkish world record holder Emre Sakic in 25″90. And again in Otopeni (Romania) at the European Short Course Championships Lorenzo Mora won gold in the 200m backstroke.

“It’s true that I won but some things weren’t perfect in the race – declares the Lombard and Italian record holder (25″37). I am very happy for the victory which I want to dedicate to captain Matteo Rivolta, who today took the relay to the final despite an injury. I’m also happy for Simone: he deserves it.” The Romagna player echoes him: “It’s an incredible joy for me. Nicolò is an example and a constant stimulus: a great champion – says Cesare Casella’s pupil, fifth in the double distance – I would like to address a thought to my club, to my coach and to my entire family”.

Jasmine Nocentini was also on the podium in the women’s 50m breaststroke

The Italian exploit at the European Swimming Championships also continues in the short course in Romania. After Martinenghi – Mora here is the golden trio with Simona Quadarella in the 400 freestyle who takes revenge on the naturalized Frenchwoman Kirpichnikova, who had relegated her to the silver medal in the 800 and 1500, going on to take a wonderful European title in the 400 freestyle. Title already won in Glasgow in 2019. A perfect race for Christian Minotti’s pupil who finished in 3:59.50, his new personal best.

The fourth gold comes with another revenge, that of Alberto Razzetti, who dominated the 400 medley, even obliterating Lazlo Cesh with the new championship record of 3:57:01. The Ligurian made no concessions to Duncan Scott, the breaststroke section was decisive where he definitively put the Scotsman who had beaten him in the 200 medley on his shoulder. The fifth gold of the day comes in the women’s 50m breaststroke: Benedetta Pilato also enchants and leaves her mark in Romania with the gold won in the 50m breaststroke, where Italy also reaches the podium with Jasmine Nocentini who takes the bronze medal. Pilato’s triumph in 28″86 is worth the championship record.
