A ruling by the European Court of Justice has opened the door to the Super League. The sports marketing agency A22, run by former RTL managing director Bernd Reichart, prevailed in the legal dispute against UEFA, meaning the European football association is not allowed to exploit its monopoly position. The European Court of Justice said there should be no penalties for players or clubs who take part in competitions outside the umbrella of UEFA or FIFA.
