Europa League Freiburg meets RC Lens in the second round

As second in the group, SC Freiburg winters in the Europa League, but has to play in the second round. The opponent is now determined.
SC Freiburg will play against RC Lens in the second round of the Europa League for a place in the round of 16. This resulted in the draw for the second most important European club competition at the headquarters of the European Football Union (UEFA) in Nyon.
The games will be played on February 15th and 22nd, the sports club first has to play away and has home advantage in the second leg. The South Baden team, trained by coach Christian Streich, finished the group phase in the Europa League in second place behind Premier League club West Ham United and were unable to avoid the detour through the playoff round due to missing out on group victory. Lens is currently seventh in French Ligue 1. The French finished third in Champions League Group B behind Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven.
Bundesliga table leaders Bayer Leverkusen are another German participant who are first in their preliminary group and are directly in the round of the best 16. The Werkself won all six games in the group phase. The round of 16 will take place in March.
Donetsk in Hamburg against Marseille
There will be a Europa League duel between Shakhtar Donetsk and Olympique Marseille in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion on February 15th. Because of the war at home, the Ukrainian champions are playing their international home games in Hamburg this season. Shakhtar was drawn against the top French club for the two playoff games to qualify for the round of 16. The second leg in Marseille will take place on February 22nd.
Donetsk started the season in the Champions League and has already played against FC Porto, FC Barcelona and Royal Antwerp in Hamburg. As third in the group, the Ukrainians can continue playing in the Europa League after the winter break. Opponent Marseille is coached by Italian world champion Gennaro Gattuso and lost the final of the Europa League and its predecessor competition, the UEFA Cup, in 1999, 2004 and 2018.
