ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen Triumphs in the Women’s Bundesliga Championship After Power Outage

In the sixth attempt, ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen managed to win the championship title in Pongau for the first time. Even a power outage couldn’t stop the fighters from their victory.

LOWER FOREST CHURCHES. In the sixth attempt, ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen finally achieved the long-awaited big hit. After three bronze medals and two runner-up titles, the Salzburg women secured the crown of the women’s Bundesliga for the first time in a breathtaking Final Four final in Niederwaldkirchen (Upper Austria). The Pongau women narrowly but deservedly won 6:6 (60:57) against the “host team” UJZ Mühlviertel.

light off

The final tournament started promisingly for Sanjindo, who confidently won the first semi-final against Askö Reichraming/Upper Austria with 8:4. But then an unexpected incident occurred. The lights went out not only in the sports hall, but in large parts of Upper Austria due to a heavy snowfall that left around 30,000 households in the dark. Even in the hall in Niederwaldkirchen, the (cell phone) flashlights had to be unpacked. The light only returned at 5:30 p.m. and the final against Mühlviertel (semi-final 8:3 vs. Leibnitz) could finally begin!

On Sanjindo’s side, Elena (-70), Lisa Dengg (-48) and Maria Höllwart (team captain, +70) showed outstanding performances and won two fights each. Nevertheless, it was a duel on a knife’s edge, because Mikota (Mühlviertel) won her first duel against Larissa Sickinger (-52) with a Waza-ari. But all other fights ended prematurely due to Ippon, which ultimately swung the title pendulum in favor of ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen.

Deserved champions

ÖJV sports director Markus Moser summarized the spectacular event: “Excitement, spectacle, drama and emotions – this duel had everything a Final Four final must have. Even though it was closer in the end than the preliminary round would have suggested: Bischofshofen deserved to be crowned champions.”

The Final Four also caused drama off the mat. Due to the heavy snowfall in Upper Austria, the lights in the hall went out several times. Even Höllwart’s decisive battle could only take place thanks to the TV spotlights used as emergency lighting, as Moser reported: “Organizationally, these were difficult conditions because of the snow-related power outages in Upper Austria.”

The best Bundesliga fighter in 2023 was also honored at the Final Four. This title deservedly went to Lisa Dengg, who won all of her fights this season with Ippon. Another triumph for ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen and a crowning conclusion to a memorable season!
