Founding president of the Mulsanne karate club in 2001, Eric Guernevé, who trains the club’s adults on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., earned a new rank on December 1 at the National Judo Institute in Paris, the 6th dan.
24 candidates from all over France
Eric looks back on this high-level passage in which 24 other candidates from France participated: “We come with a partner, in this case my friend Mickaël Marais, teacher at the Moncé-en-Belin and Allonnes club, and several events are on the program”. He details the content: “First there is a kion, demonstration of technical sequences of free choice in relation to the level; we had prepared five of them, and we apply them with the partner, then a kata part, we presented two of them, then a bunkai part, transposition of the kata for two which comes in lots of subtleties, we must be able to execute them ; and finally a two-person fight with frank, sincere, unrestrained attacks”. But it’s not over, there remains one final obligatory phase: “The tests end with an exchange with the jury made up of level 8 or 9 dan karatekas, on our course.” After this oral session in front of big names in the discipline, the announcement of the result is immediate: “It was good, I validated the 6th dan level which will be registered on my sports passport and which results in the presentation of the red and white belt, the color of Japan”.
To progress further, Eric will have to wait at least 7 years before attempting the higher grade, and he points out: “Karate can be practiced until an advanced age, in France for example we have two nonagenarians at the rank of 10th dan: Jean-Pierre Lavorato, from Fréjus, and Dominique Lavéra, from Lyon.”
The desire to recruit
For now, he would like to see the club’s numbers increase: “We are 40 members, including 16 teenagers trained on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. by Maryse Gauthier, 2nd dan, we would like to reach 60; there is also training on Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for adults with Bruno Bénabant, 3rd dan who is preparing for 4th”.
