Elina Svitolina has always been very vocal about the situation that began several months ago in Ukraine. Although she still has no end, the Ukrainian helps her compatriots in every way possible, both financially and financially.
At the center of controversy on several occasions by refusing to play against Russian or Belarusian rivals at the beginning, Elina does not shake hands now on the net, something that did not sit well with many people either: “I feel like right now I have a mission of many different ways. A lot of Ukrainians message me on Instagram and reach out to me when I was in Ukraine. Is very pretty. They tell me: ‘I watch your games.’ These are difficult days for them, with 80 or 90 rocket attacks, but they find time to watch my games. It is an incredible feeling,” Elina Svitolina explains to Forbes while she trains in Switzerland.
“Every time I find myself in a difficult situation, I try to remember what my friends and family are experiencing in Ukraine, the horrible situations they face. I have to be grateful for the moments I have now, playing big tournaments in front of so many people. As Billie Jean King says, pressure is a privilege. I take it that way. I feel like I have a mission right now.”
“It was a complete blackout”
“Everything was a big mess at that time,” says the Ukrainian about the moment the conflict began. Nobody really tells you how to act, how to continue living your life. The first months, people didn’t know where to live, where to be. Our city is known as the City of Humor. It was very sad to see how people live the day. It was a complete blackout. I know that every game, I come away feeling like it’s my own battle, not only to bring happiness and headlines, but to continually remind people that we still need help for kids and schools.” Svitolina confesses that the attitude of the Ukrainian people is a great motivation in her life in general, not only on the track.
