Dramatic Showdown in the Handball Bundesliga: HSV Hamburg and HBW Balingen-Weilstetten Draw 28:28

It was not nice! In return, HSV Hamburg and HBW Balingen-Weilstetten at least offered exciting evening entertainment in the Liqui Moly Handball Bundesliga. With a dramatic end and a point for both – 28:28 (14:12).

For the 3,150 spectators it could have been much more relaxed – and more successful!

Balingen, shortly before its second away win of the season, leads with four (!) goals six minutes before the end (27:23). But Hamburg is fighting its way back in and the fans can no longer stay in their seats.

And actually, eleven seconds before the end, Hamburg took the lead, 28:27, thanks to their Dane Jacob Lassen. But it wasn’t enough because the weak referees Martin Thöne and Marijo Zupanovic, who shared the level of both teams, awarded Balingen a seven-meter penalty in return. A justifiable whistle!

Oddur Gretarsson takes advantage of the chance, stays ice cold against HSV goalkeeper Jens Vortmann, and scores after the 60 minutes have expired.

“I’m torn,” Balingen coach Jens Bürkle takes a deep breath. One point for staying in the league! “I’m happy to have won a point here. But at 27:23 I was hoping for more. At the end of the day I’m happy with the point. And satisfied, but somehow not!”

His counterpart, HSV coach Torsten Jansen, was in a similar emotional situation. “It was a psychological game. Everyone from outside expected us to win against Balingen. Something like that triggers something in the brain.”

The southern Germans, also in the far south of the table, had the sensation on the Elbe in their hands. It would have been the first success in over a month, the first abroad since September 1st.

It was a cramp of attrition in the Hamburg sports hall. HSV without Andreas Magaard and Dominik Axmann (both torn cruciate ligaments), Balingen without circle edge Felix Danner (ill). But the bottom team had taken the Egyptian national goalkeeper Mohamed El-Tayar with them to the north.

The 27-year-old shone in the HBW goal, magically attracted the balls – and got into the heads of Hamburg. After just 13 minutes, El-Tayar had eight saves and in the end there were 16 (37.2 percent).

The Hamburg team despaired of the Egyptian and carelessly squandered a large number of clear chances. Particularly blatant: Olympic champion Casper U. Mortensen tried a backhand throw during the counterattack in the fourth minute. El-Tayar had fun with the Dane Casper and fished out the ball.

“This throw will be discussed again in a moment,” huffed Torsten Jansen afterwards, while Mortensen stomped into the dressing room behind him. The coach was angry and took his left winger off the field after eight minutes. Penal transfer for the Dane!

Jansen was also annoyed that Mortensen (2) and Frederik Bo Andersen (1) missed a total of three seven meters. Only three out of six from the line!

HSV with line allergy!

“Our shooting percentage was underground. You can’t win a game like that,” complains Jansen. Playmaker Leif Tissier: “I’m hugely disappointed. If you throw away so many open shots, you don’t have a chance against any team. We don’t want to be satisfied with a point against a promoted team at home.”

The Hamburgers are now expecting the Champions League winner SC Magdeburg on Tuesday. “When I think about it, I get a little scared and anxious,” says Jansen. “But not only do we have nothing to lose, we have nothing to lose. Maybe there will be an explosion.”

HSV goals: Mortensen 7/3, Weller 5, Baijens 4, Andersen 3, Lassen 3, Tissier 3, Valullin 2, Ilic 1.

HBW goals: Volz 7, Schoch 6, Huber 4, Grétarsson 3/3, Müller 3, Grahovac 2, Prantner 2, Heinzelmann 1.
