Dominic Thiem’s Preparations for the 2024 Tennis Season: Training, Strategy, and Goals

During an 18-day stay in Dubai, Thiem meets top people such as Andy Murray, Andrej Rublev, Grigor Dimitrow and Karen Khachanow. On December 25th he will travel to Australia. After his last match of the season in Metz, Thiem first went on vacation to a Greek island, among other things. “I then started doing fitness after a week and a half or two weeks and also made good use of the time at home to improve the smaller problems that I had accumulated over the last year.”

He then started fitness training early and also played tennis a few times in Austria. “Now in Dubai the tennis is of course starting in full,” said the 30-year-old. Starting in Austria helped him in this regard. So it wasn’t a “cold start” in Dubai.

IMAGO/Dubreuil Corinne The year 2024 should be better for Dominic Thiem than the current one

Hoping for a good start

“I feel good and stable, physically everything is fine. Now, of course, there are still a lot of intensive days, a lot of training with top people like Murray, Dimitrov, Rublew, Khachanov, Djere – very, very many people there. The training conditions are also great.”

On Christmas Day, Thiem will fly “Down Under”. “I hope that I can have a good start to the season there.” His start will take place in Brisbane at the beginning of January, then he has planned the invitation tournament Kooyong Classic, which, like the Australian Open (from January 14th), will take place in Melbourne.

Ofner “on the pitch again for a lot of hours”

Sebastian Ofner is getting the finishing touches from Thiem’s father Wolfgang in Traiskirchen. Before that there was a vacation that went well. “It was necessary to really slow down and relax after the long season. “To also realize what happened this year,” explained the Styrian, who has been training again since November 27th. “Now I’m starting full tennis training again. Tennis plus fitness every day for two weeks until Christmas. Lots of hours on the pitch again, which I definitely need again. Above all, we still have a few things we are working on,” said the world number 43. He feels in great shape and pain-free.

IMAGO/Juergen Hasenkopf Sebastian Ofner is also fully focused on the coming season

Nothing has changed in his goal for 2024, which begins with the tournament in Hong Kong and the Australian Open – he may add Adelaide before that. “Keeping myself in the rankings will be difficult enough anyway.” After all, this is the first time he’s playing every tournament on the ATP tour. “You can play against a top ten player in the first round.” At Challenger level, you can sometimes win a few rounds even with worse tennis.

“In the best case scenario, my goal is of course to continue to work my way up, perhaps one day to the top 30. That would of course be great, but 50 plus/minus would be great.” The 27-year-old Styrian, who competed at the French Open this year, among others The round of 16 has arrived and is already “really looking forward to next year”. “It will be the first year of my career on the ATP tour right from the start, in the main draw at all Masters and Grand Slams.” This is further motivation to work more and “really give it another go”.
