Dominic Thiem is in the main draw in Brisbane

Thiem beat the Italian Giulio Zeppieri 3:6, 6:4 and 6:4 in his second qualifying match and thus secured a place in the star-studded main draw in Brisbane. At the start of the qualifying, the Austrian had to fend off three set points against James McCabe before he was able to hold his own in three sets.

The match against Zeppieri didn’t start well for Dominic Thiem: he had to give up his first serve to make it 0-2. That was enough to result in the loss of round one. In the second act, Thiem fended off break points at both 3:3 and 4:4, before he struck himself in the tenth game. And the decision also went up to 5:4 for Thiem with the serve. The 2020 US Open champion then achieved the last and most important break of the game.

Who Thiem will face in round one in Brisbane will only be decided after all qualifying matches have ended. In any case, the main draw table is led by Holger Rune ahead of Grigor Dimitrov. What is certain, however, is that one of the qualifiers has to play against the returnee Rafael Nadal.
