DFB Vice-President Calls for Radical Change in German National Team Squad

Clear words from the DFB vice-president.

In an interview with the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” and the “Neue Presse”, Ralph-Uwe Schaffert (67) weighed in on the current squad of the German national team and criticized: “It would be time to radically change the playing staff. “Ohh…

Schaffert has been on the DFB executive board since March 2022 and is also head of the North German Football Association. According to DFB.de, his tasks include cultural affairs, honors and charity events. And personnel planning?

The DFB vice-president explains: “You may no longer just need the highly gifted, but also those “who are prepared to roll up their sleeves”. He also explains his clear criticism of the DFB players as follows: “Because I have the feeling that with a not very small number of players currently active, they think they can get by with perhaps 85 percent of the possible effort on the pitch.”

Does he name names? Yes. Schaffert’s criticism is directed, for example, at Joshua Kimmich (28) from FC Bayern. He is always mentioned as a leading player. Schaffert: “So far he has failed to provide proof. Even in the club.”

Lothar Matthäus also recently judged Kimmich: “Not only is he no longer as present on the pitch, he is also no longer as present after the game. And there are probably reasons for that. He is hiding.”

But Schaffert doesn’t just take action against Kimmich. The DFB vice-president cannot understand the sometimes different performances of Ilkay Gündogan (33/FC Barcelona) in the club and the national team. So one might come up with the idea: “Did he send his less talented twin brother? I do not understand that.”

In 2023, the DFB team played eleven games and we only won three. We lost the last two games of the year 2:3 against Turkey and 0:2 against Austria. The change in national coach in September didn’t bring anything either. Julian Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick, the former Bayern coach is now expected to lead the team to success at the home European Championships 2024 (June 14th to July 14th).
