DFB Cup Quarter-Final Draw Unveils Exciting Matchups

The quarter-final round of the DFB Cup brings with it some exciting duels. It is already clear that two second division teams will definitely be in the semi-finals. The reason for this is a top game in the Bundesliga.

Because just a few hours after the Bundesliga game, Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart saw each other again at the draw. U17 world champion coach Christian Wück and his assistant coach Jens Nowotny caused great celebration with their pairing at the German Football Museum in Dortmund.

The third and final Bundesliga club, Borussia Mönchengladbach, can be happy about the supposedly easy away game at 1. FC Saarbrücken. However, the third division team had previously thrown Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern Munich out of the tournament.

“With our spectators behind us, we want to move forward again,” said Saarbrücken’s sports director Jürgen Luginger on the ARD microphone: “Everyone has a hard time in Ludwigspark.”

And Bayer’s sports director Simon Rolfes was also self-confident: “It’s clear that we have drawn VfB, definitely the strongest opponent. But if you want to win the cup, you have to beat everyone, regardless of which round.”

The remaining two pairings are also within the league. Hertha BSC welcomes 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Fortuna Düsseldorf visits 1. FC St. Pauli.

The encounters will take place on January 30th and 31st and February 6th and 7th – for the first time in history over two weeks. The final will take place on May 25th in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

In the women’s division, defending champion and record cup winner VfL Wolfsburg has to play against TSG Hoffenheim, while Bayer Leverkusen hosts SGS Essen in another first division duel.

Two round of 16 games have to be played in January due to the Champions League schedule. The winner of the game between underdog Kickers Offenbach and champions Bayern Munich will face Carl Zeiss Jena in the quarter-finals, Eintracht Frankfurt or SC Freiburg will host MSV Duisburg.

The women will play their quarter-final games from March 5th to 7th, with the final taking place on May 9th in Cologne.
