Four Germans are still at the Darts World Cup, three are already in round three. Black-Red-Gold is surprisingly the second strongest faction in the tournament. Now it’s time for the big duel with England.

The German fans have been working on new majority relationships in the audience for a long time. This time, almost a third of the tickets for the 2024 Darts World Cup went to Germany – even more than in previous years. In some of the 28 sessions there are more Germans sitting, standing and singing in Alexandra Palace than English people.

Now the players from good old Germany are also having more and more influence on the tournament. A year ago, thanks to Gabriel Clemens’ semi-final entry, he was at the top, and now also at the top. “Darts Germany is on a new level,” recognized Martin Schindler after his victory over the Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena. Immediately beforehand, Florian Hempel had already booked his ticket for the period after Christmas.

The 24 players who have qualified for the third round so far come from twelve different nations. Nine English people are already there, two Dutch, two Welsh, a Latvian, a Swede, a Pole, a Canadian, a Northern Irishman, a Croat, a Scot, an Australian – and for the first time three Germans. The duo Schindler and Hempel, who prepared for their matches together on Friday, will be complemented by the German number one. Clemens, now also the German record winner at Alexandra Palace, had already progressed on Thursday. A fourth player, Ricardo Pietreczko, could even join the team on Saturday.

The strange thing: All four face Englishmen in their matches. Pietreczko plays against Callan Rydz, Schindler against Scott Williams, Gabriel Clemens faces Dave Chisnall, and Florian Hempel is waiting for the winner of the game between Stephen Bunting and Ryan Joyce. From a German perspective, the World Cup will be a major comparison of countries after Christmas.
