After Martin Schindler, Gabriel Clemens was also eliminated from the Darts World Cup. The German number one experienced a debacle on the doubles courts in the first three sets against Dave Chisnall. His subsequent comeback came too late.

Gabriel Clemens also said goodbye to the Darts World Cup in the third round. The German lost 4-1 to number eleven in the world rankings Dave Chisnall. Nobody expected the 40-year-old to have a similarly sensational run as at the last World Cup, when he was the first German to reach the semi-finals, and the elimination against the Englishman, who was ranked eleven places higher in the Order of Merit, was no surprise either. However, the way this happened could not have been expected.

“I am well prepared, feel good and have played well in the last few weeks,” he said confidently in an interview with Sport1 before the match: “I have to make sure that I have good moments and good timing.”

However, there wasn’t a single one of them, at least until the second break. The start of the “German Giant” was like a debacle on the double fields. Clemens only won one of the first nine legs. When he finally secured his second leg at 0:2 after sets and legs, he had a miserable doubles rate of 10.5 percent. It was only his second goal in the 19th attempt. Chisnall, on the other hand, scored extremely well with a success rate of 66.7 percent. When Chisnall checked a little later to make it 3-0, the match was as good as decided.

Schindler misses opportunities

Clemens now played freely and secured the fourth set 3-1 to the delight of the 800 German fans in the Ally Pally with an average score of 102.36. Pushed by the audience, the Saarlander showed himself to be combative once again as he went into the final break. His double rate was now 18.5 percent.

But the hope only lasted for a short time. Clemens immediately lost his serve at the beginning of the fifth set and was no longer able to make up the deficit against his opponent, who was three years older than him. The Englishman missed a match type on double 19, so that “Gaga” was able to check 72 points to make it 2-2 and had the advantage of the throw-off on his side in the decider.

But there was no more than one chance with 116 points remaining. Clemens was only able to play down to 60 points before Chisnall checked for a deserved victory.

Martin Schindler had previously opened the games at Ally Pally after the Christmas break, but was unable to take advantage of his chances on his return. The man from Strausberg had confidently taken a quick 2-0 lead and had several opportunities to decide the match, but ultimately lost to Englishman Scott Williams 3-4 in extra time.

The two other Germans still in the tournament will be in action on Thursday. Florian Hempel will face Englishman Stephen Bunting in the afternoon, Ricardo Pietreczko will play against World Cup favorite Luke Humphries in the evening. For the first time, four Germans made it to the third round of this World Cup. In previous years there had never been more than two. Curious: For Hempel and Pietreczko, the route to the round of 16 also leads via an Englishman.
