Daniil Medvedev’s Ambitious Plans for 2024: Chasing Grand Slam Titles and a Return to Number 1

Daniil Medvedev does not want to settle for being a player capable of winning important titles and who is among the best in the world. At 27 years old, the Russian feels that he has aspects to improve and shows a strong ambition to do so and give himself the necessary options to return to number 1 and add Grand Slam titles.

He has been living in the elite for years and that makes him value what he is experiencing more. He expresses it that way Daniil Medvedev in an interesting talk with TheNational, in which he shows his firm will to be a better tennis player and continue progressing, in order to take advantage of opportunities to win big titles. The Russian was the protagonist again in 2023, but the season seemed a bit long and he suffered unexpected ups and downs. He wants to show that he is capable of staying consistently among the top four in the world and opting, with certain guarantees, to add another Grand Slam title. In that sense, his reflections on the supremacy of Novak Djokovic and the return of Rafael Nadal to the courts deserve to be taken into account.

– Assessment of your season and ambition for 2024

“Sometimes, with age you have problems keeping the flame alive, but that is not my case. I know that I am already a young man looking for his first success, but right now I am at the moment in which I have felt more motivated to be better tennis player and win important things. I want to work to explore my limits, be more professional, fight harder,” says Daniil, who is clear about the aspect in which he wants to progress compared to this year. “I finished the season quite tired mentally, I don’t want that to be repeated in 2024,” commented the Russian, aware that he is the main alternative to Djokovic and the upward trend of Sinner and Alcaraz, acting as a bridge between the two generations.

Questioned about what his expectations are regarding his great rivals, Medvedev offers an interesting reflection. “I think that both they and I were one step above the others, as the ranking showed. In each season you can see ups and downs of the majority of tennis players. Stefanos started by making the final in Australia, but then he had a difficult year. In everything case, he can return to his best level, and that type of ups and downs can happen to anyone, including those of us who are in the top-4,” Daniil warned before making a clarification regarding Novak Djokovic. “The only thing I’m sure of is that Novak will always be up there,” he said.

– Improvement on clay and return of Rafael Nadal

“One of the best news for me in 2023 has been proving to myself that, being at 100%, I can be a great player on clay. It has always been quite difficult for me to make surface changes and I know that in 2024 I will have an enormous challenge in this, because after the clay, comes the grass, and then again the clay,” declares Medvedev, conveying his motivation to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. “I really want to get physically stronger and fight to win important titles,” he warned before referring to Nadal’s return.

And it is that Daniil Medvedev He has lived unforgettable episodes with Rafa, forging a passionate rivalry that could have another installment in 2024. “Whenever he has been able to compete, he was able to win many matches and compete for important titles. It is a bit the same script as Djokovic, “He is very difficult to beat. It would be a great challenge to face him again because I have suffered even more than with Novak. From what I have seen he seems to be having a good feeling and that is fantastic for our sport,” argued the Russian.
