Damper for Benfica ahead of the CL duel with Salzburg

Benfica Lisbon travels to Salzburg next week for a guest appearance in the UEFA Champions League without a sense of success. Former Salzburg coach Roger Schmidt’s club had to be content with a 1-1 home draw against SC Farense in the league on Friday.

Rafa (74th) secured a point for the home team after Claudio Falcao (51st) had scored. Benfica is second in the table, one point behind Sporting Lisbon, and has played one more game than the leader.

Benfica have always ended their last three competitive games with a draw. Should another one be added on Tuesday (9 p.m.) in Wals-Siezenheim, the European Cup out would be sealed. One point is enough for Salzburg to secure third place in Champions League Group D and thus secure a move to the knockout phase of the Europa League next year.
