Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy Undergoes Appendectomy, Plans to Coach Sunday’s Game

FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is out to undergo an appendectomy, but he expects to be on the sidelines Sunday night for the highly anticipated game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The team said McCarthy was hospitalized after experiencing acute abdominal pain Wednesday morning. He was to have surgery in the afternoon and be released from the hospital in the evening.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, himself the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, met with members of the media during McCarthy’s usual press briefing on Wednesday. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer should do the same on Thursday.

McCarthy, who celebrated his 60th birthday last month, is in his fourth season at the helm of the Cowboys, but first as the one responsible for calling the plays. Quinn wouldn’t say who would call the plays Sunday since McCarthy is expected to be at his position.

The Cowboys (9-3) are one game behind the National Association champions, the Eagles (10-2), in the East section. The Cowboys are currently on a 14-game unbeaten home streak, and they must win in order to hope to steal their section title from the Eagles. The latter won the first match between the two teams this season 28-23 in Philadelphia.
