Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary, paralyzes production in Japan after irregularities in safety tests – El Sol de México

The Japanese vehicle manufacturer Daihatsu Motor, a subsidiary of Toyota, announced today that it will keep its domestic production paralyzed until at least the end of January, after irregularities were detected in the safety or emissions data of many of its models.

The suspension of production and all sales of the manufacturer both inside and outside Japan was notified on the 20th, when the company made public the results of an external investigation into these anomalies.

The irregularities affect 64 Daihatsu models and three vehicle engines, including 22 models and one engine sold under the Toyota brand.

As a result, the Japanese manufacturer’s headquarters and some of its plants have been inspected by the Japanese Ministry of Transportation.

At the moment it is unknown when the company will be able to resume domestic production or distribution outside Japan, although Daihatsu has resumed sales in Indonesia and Malaysia after receiving approval from local authorities.

The suspension of domestic production will affect approximately 8,000 companies that work directly or indirectly as Daihatsu suppliers, according to Japanese media.

Daihatsu, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota, is one of the largest manufacturers of mini ‘kei’ (light) vehicles, models widely popular in Japan and Southeast Asian countries, and as such plays a key role in the sales expansion strategy. of Toyota throughout the Asian continent.

In fiscal year 2022 (from April of that year to last March), Daihatsu produced 1.7 million vehicles globally, half of them manufactured in domestic plants.

Daihatsu has a market share of approximately 30% for minivehicle models, making it the leader in the sector along with its competitor Suzuki Motor, according to data from the Japanese newspaper Nikkei.
