‘Creating a Healthy Future: The Passion of Physical Education Teachers in Empowering Students’

Schools are shaken, and teaching authority is threatened. Nevertheless, teachers’ passion and dedication to raising children healthily remains unchanged. Physical education classes created with that passion still make children’s hearts beat with anticipation. A place of true education where respect and consideration are realized through physical activities. This is our ‘Heart Thumping Again Physical Education Class’. Sports Chosun, along with the Ministry of Education and the School Sports Promotion Association, set out to find physical education sites that are nurturing a healthy future for us. It is a ‘role model’ of school physical education created by the teacher’s passion, children’s interest and participation, and their shining energy.

[스포츠조선 윤진만 기자]“I hit it too high. I have to hit it bravely. If (the shuttlecock) falls, I have to save it with an under shot and move my feet!” At the end of November, I visited Munjeong High School in Songpa-gu, Seoul, shaking off the snowflakes that had landed on my shoulder. As I open the door to the gym located on the second floor, the sound of a female teacher training catches my ear. At first glance, Munjeong High School teacher Lee Eun-kyung (38), who corrects her students’ posture and teaches them detailed know-how, seems like a ‘badminton expert’. Second-year female students were undergoing a performance evaluation in which two students were paired up and had to exchange shuttlecocks 30 times to determine their scores. Once or twice she was not good at holding a badminton racket. Even if the opponent accidentally sent the ball to the wrong place, he was able to save it with ease. She runs a badminton club within the regular curriculum as part of the 365+ Physical Education program. You can immediately see how passionately this teacher teaches by looking at her students’ swing posture. This teacher boasted that he helped the women’s badminton team, which missed out in last year’s preliminary round, grow into a second-place team this year, and that the men’s badminton team won second place in the 2023 Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education School Sports Club Competition.

This teacher, whom we sat down to chat with after class, could not be explained simply as an instructor who ‘loved’ badminton. He was a ‘real athlete’ who worked at a large company and applied for a teaching position to realize his dream of becoming a physical education teacher, and he was a ‘physical education planner’ who transformed Munjeong High School’s physical education classes after the COVID-19 pandemic era. He was also a ‘multi-player’ who tried his hand at various fields and attempted unique activities. The volleyball tactics class using a 360-degree camera and the health sharing sports day conducted directly by teachers and students rather than renting the Jamsil Student Gymnasium in Seoul and entrusting it to an external company were evaluated as unique. Ji Ye-jin, a first-year student, said, “The sports competition held in July is the most memorable.”

Reporter Heo [email protected]/2023.11.29/ This teacher is working on improving and strengthening the quality of physical education classes after the COVID-19 pandemic, physical events to acquire sports culture, Seoul Forest Sports Festival, Seoul Future Sports Talent Festival, sports advancement, career employment, etc. It operates and implements expos, digital-based smart health management classrooms, school sports club activation, 365+ physical education activities, and gap sports projects, and won the grand prize in the 2023 School Sports Contest in the improvement of school physical education category. This teacher said, “I spent a year worrying and trying to figure out what I would do as a physical education teacher during the COVID-19 period to normalize exciting educational activities,” and added, “I applied the day before the contest closed, but I had no idea I would win such a big award.” “I didn’t know,” he said, laughing.

‘Kumdam Classroom (Classroom with Dreams)’ is this teacher’s ‘ambitious work’. This teacher put into action the idea of turning the second floor of Munjeong High School’s Building 1, which leads to the gymnasium and playground, into a physical activity-oriented space. ‘Kumdam Classroom’ is a school space restructuring project of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. This teacher created a smart health management classroom on the second floor of the Munjeong High School building and moved the multicultural classroom to the fourth floor. The arts and physical education room, where physical education teachers work, was moved to the first floor with convenient access to the playground. Construction progressed smoothly during the summer vacation, and the ‘Kumdam Classroom’ has been in use since the second semester. Teacher Lee said, “It was difficult when what we had prepared during the construction process was not fully reflected, but we overcame it through communication,” and added, “I feel rewarded when I see the children’s explosive response.” Ji Ye-jin was satisfied, saying, “I always like golf. I think it will be helpful in the future because I can learn and practice golf.” Munjeong High School is one of the few public high schools with a swimming pool and gym facilities on campus.
