BWF Suspends Membership of National Badminton Federation of Russia for Violating Membership Conditions

LAUSANNE (ANP/RTR) – The International Badminton Federation (BWF) has suspended the membership of the National Badminton Federation of Russia (NBFR). This was decided after it emerged that the Russian association had violated the membership conditions, the BWF reports on its website.

The international federation reports that the NBFR “includes within its jurisdiction areas under the jurisdiction” of Ukraine. “These are the Ukrainian areas of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia,” the association reports.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus have been banned from BWF tournaments. From the end of February 2024, players from Russia or Belarus will be allowed to participate in badminton tournaments under a neutral flag. The condition is that the athletes in question do not express support for the war in Ukraine.
