Bundesliga: completely overwhelmed, Bayern and Upamecano lose 5-1 in Frankfurt

For its first defeat in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich did not do things by halves. In Frankfurt, Harry Kane’s teammates were overwhelmed from start to finish, conceding a humiliating setback (1-5), Saturday afternoon for the 14th day of the German championship. Like his defense partners, French international Dayot Upamecano went completely through and suffered against the speed of the opposing attackers.

Eintracht was carried by former Parisian Éric Junior Dina Ebimbe, author of a double (31st, 50th). Omar Marmoush (12th), Hugo Larsson (36th) and Ansgar Knauff (60th) are the other scorers, while Joshua Kimmich reduced the score after a catastrophic first act (44th).

Bayern had already conceded three goals after 36 minutes, making their worst start to a Bundesliga match in 19 years. As if this big setback was not enough, the Rekordmeister lost Serge Gnabry, who went out with an injury… three minutes after coming into play.

Biggest defeat since 2019

As a direct consequence of this day without, Bayern leaves Bayer Leverkusen alone as leader of the Bundesliga. Xabi Alonso’s players could even take a six-point lead at the top if they beat Stuttgart (3rd) on Sunday at 3:30 p.m., while Bayern has a game in hand (January 24 against Union Berlin).

Until then, the Bavarians will have to digest this biggest defeat in the league since 2019, already on the field of Eintracht Frankfurt (1-5). This did not prevent the Munich club from achieving, at the end of this season truncated by Covid-19, a formidable sextuplet. Beaten in the Champions League final by Bayern with PSG, Bavarian coach Thomas Tuchel could see this as a sign.
