Bronny James receives the go-ahead from doctors to return to basketball

LOS ANGELES (UNITED STATES), December 1 (tca/dpa/EP) –

Bronny James, eldest son of Los Angeles Lakers player LeBron James and a freshman at USC, has been cleared by doctors to return to playing basketball, just four months after he suffered sudden cardiac arrest during a training.

James could return to training with his university next week, following a final evaluation with the USC staff this week. Afterwards, the expectation is that he will “return to games shortly thereafter,” the James family said in a statement.

“The James family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible medical team, the entire USC community and especially the countless friends, family and fans for their love and support. Keep fighting!” the family added.

James collapsed on the court last July during a training game, just a year after another college player, center Vince Iwuchukwu, suffered a similar cardiac incident. LeBron James’ son was hospitalized for three days and was subsequently diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, for which he underwent surgery shortly after.

Bronny James had increased his activity recently, even warming up with the team before the final games. After USC’s win Wednesday over Eastern Washington, coach Andy Enfield reported that the freshman would be back soon, but he declined to offer any kind of timeline.
