Tennis icon Boris Becker exchanged blows with Australian Nick Kyrgios on social networks. Becker complained at Kyrgios, who is considered the scene’s bad boy, launched a direct counterattack.
“Nick has been making a lot of noise about tennis lately,” Becker wrote: “Why is he talking about a sport he obviously hates.” Kyrgios had previously made comparisons between the level of former tennis heroes and today’s top star Novak Djokovic in an interview with The Athletic.
“The game was slow back then,” said Kyrgios, saying he had seen Becker’s matches. “And I’m not saying that they weren’t good in their time. But to say that they would be just as good today is absurd,” said the 28-year-old: “That’s a completely different game.”
Becker made it clear that he doesn’t consider comparisons between different tennis generations to be useful and didn’t miss a swipe at Kyrgios. Kyrgios has never won a Grand Slam in singles, so where does his credibility come from?
Kyrgios then became personal. “As far as I know, you were the one who hid assets, right?” wrote the currently injured former world number 13. in reference to Becker’s prison sentence.
The six-time major champion Becker wished Kyrgios, who is an “exciting player” when fully fit, a quick return to the pitch. “He has what it takes to win a Grand Slam,” wrote Becker: “But you have to let your actions speak for themselves on the pitch.”
