Boca announced Diego Martínez as its new coach: who is he and where did he coach? | Riquelme’s chosen one for the 2024 season

Boca officially announced through its social networks that it had reached an agreement with Diego Martínez to be the new coach of the first team. The contract has not yet been formalized.

“Boca and Diego Martínez reached an agreement. The club and the coach are working on formalizing the contract,” says the message shared by the institution on social networks.

Diego Martínez, new coach of Boca

Boca has been working on hiring Diego Martínez for weeks, but the information was not officially confirmed for two reasons. The first is that in the middle there were elections in the club. The opposition formula formed by Andrés Ibarra and Mauricio Macri campaigned with the figure of Martín Palermo as coach, so the future of all types of negotiations depended on the results.

Once the Justice allowed the partners to go to the polls to exercise their right to vote – after a judicial attack by the Macri administration with the aim of muddying the field knowing that the result would be unfavorable -, Juan Román Riquelme and Jorge Amor Ameal won overwhelmingly with more than 65% of the votes.

On the other hand, Martínez’s separation from Huracán had to be arranged, since the coach still had a contract until June 2024 with Globo. The Parque Patricios club demanded the advance it had given the coach before signing and the 6 months of his remaining contract—a sum close to, in total, $300,000.

Who is Diego Martínez and what teams did he lead?

Diego Martínez is a former soccer player and current soccer coach. He began his career as a player – he was a central midfielder – in Ituzaingó and went through clubs such as Deportivo Morón, All Boys, Temperley and Estudiantes de Caseros. He also played for Aurora in Guatemala and Pierikos and Diagoras in Greece, among others.

As a coach he began his career in the children’s and youth categories and even managed the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004 Boca categories. In that step, under the orders of former youth director Coqui Raffo, during the presidency of Daniel Angelici, he coached players such as Aaron Molinas, Marcelo Weigandt, Agustín Almendra, Valentín Barco, Vicente Taborda, Equi Fernández, Facundo Colidio, Agustín Sández and Agustín Obando, among others.

That was shortly before starting his career as a coach in First Division. In 2015 he signed his contract as coach of Ituzaingó, he went through Cañuelas, Comunicaciones, Midland and Estudiantes de Buenos Aires. Until 2020 he reached the first division, with Godoy Cruz. At Tomba he had a very short time, only 9 games.

But at the beginning of 2021 he arrived at Tigre, where he spent 1 and a half years, putting together a great squad and a team that played good offensive football. In fact, he reached the final of the 2022 League Cup —eliminating River in the quarterfinals—, in which he lost to Boca.

In July 2023 he signed with Huracán: he directed 23 games with an average of 1.65 points, a product of 12 wins, two draws and 9 losses. El Globo reached the quarterfinals of the 2023 League Cup after finishing as the leader in its area. Martínez came to a team that was fighting relegation, he took them out of the red zone and made them excited about fighting for the championship.
