Bills vs Chiefs Week 14 Instant Classic: Buffalo Prevails 20-17

The recent matchups between the Kansas City Chiefs (8-5) and the Buffalo Bills (7-6) have been instant classics and the one from Week 14 of the 2023 season did not disappoint. Josh Allen’s team beat Patrick Mahomes’ team by a score of 20-17 thanks to the Bills’ defense stopping the Chiefs’ attack after the two-minute pause.

The game began with an interception by the Chiefs quarterback. Mahomes looked for Clyde Edwards Helaire on a screen pass, but AJ Epenesa deflected the throw at the line of scrimmage and managed to keep the ball. Unfortunately, the Bills did not get points from the steal.

Buffalo scored first via a 25-yard pass from Josh Allen to James Cook and in the second quarter increased its lead with a six-yard run by the QB in which the effort of the offensive line was key to visiting the promised land.

The Chiefs avoided a first-half shutout when Chamarri Conner intercepted Allen’s throw and Kansas City capitalized with a seven-yard run by Jerick McKinnon.

Tyler Bass gave the Bills three more points on the first offensive series of the third quarter, but Mahomes immediately responded with a touchdown pass with Rashee Rice, the rookie’s sixth of the year. The rookie had a game of chiaroscuro because in the following offensive series he suffered a fumble that he stopped in an attack that promised.

Kansas City tied the game at 17 points with a 27-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. However, Buffalo took the lead on a 39-yard kick by Bass after the two-minute break in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs’ last chance against the Bills

The Chiefs had one more chance with 1:54 left and had scored on a lateral pass from Travis Kelce to Kadarius Toney, but the touchdown was nullified because the wide receiver lined up improperly when the ball was snapped.

In the end, it all ended with three incomplete passes from Mahomes due to the pressure exerted by Von Miller, Ed Oliver and Leonard Floyd. Allen only had to take a knee twice for the timer to expire and the Bills to emerge victorious from GEHA Field At Arrowhead Stadium.
