BG Göttingen Falls Short in Fiba Europe Cup Opener Against Surne Bilbao Basket

BG Göttingen failed to surprise at the start of the second group phase in the Fiba Europe Cup. In the first game on Wednesday evening, the Bundesliga basketball team had to admit defeat to the Spanish club Surne Bilbao Basket, which was considered one of the favorites, 73:75 (45:44) despite a strong performance.

Head coach Olivier Foucart’s team started the game poorly. After just under five minutes the hosts were already leading 11:2. However, as the game went on, Lower Saxony improved and thanks to a three-pointer from Umoja Gibson, they made it 15:15 in the first quarter. In the middle of the second period, Bilbao pulled away again, but the BG could not be shaken off and fought its way back into the game once again.

After the break, the action on the field repeated itself. Bilbao managed to pull away again and Göttingen equalized six minutes before the end (64:64). The decision was finally made with one second to go when Göttingen’s best thrower, Fedor Zugic (16 points), failed to throw a two-pointer at 73:74. On the other hand, Thijs De Ridder scored the final point with a converted free throw.
