Bernd Storck: The Journey of a Football Coach Across Europe

During his professional career, Bernd Storck remained loyal to the area. As a coach, however, he has already seen a lot. Now the 60-year-old is taking office in Romania.

Bernd Storck made a total of 171 Bundesliga appearances in his active career. The Herner native always remained loyal to the Ruhr region. Starting at Westfalia Herne, the right-back joined VfL Bochum in 1981, for whom he played for two years. Just two years later he moved on to his local neighbor Borussia Dortmund, for whom he played for six years, winning the DFB Cup once and ending his career in 1989.

However, Storck remained loyal to football afterwards. As an assistant coach, he sat on the bench under Jürgen Röber at VfB Stuttgart, Hertha BSC, VfL Wolfsburg, Partizan Belgrade and Borussia Dortmund. In 2008 he started his own career as a head coach.

However, not in Germany, but in Kazakhstan. There Storck took over the Tsesna Almaty club and the Kazakh U21 national team at the same time. Just two months later, the ex-professional was promoted to coach of the senior national team, which he looked after until 2010. He was then the sporting director of Kazakhstan’s U19 for around six months

His journey continued in Greece, where he coached the Olympiakos Piraeus U20s and also acted as sports director. After two years, Storck left for the next country and took over a national team again.

Storck led Hungary to the European Championship round of 16

In 2015 he trained the U20 Hungary team for two months before making the jump to the senior national team again. There he was both coach and sports director and led the Hungarians to the round of 16 at the 2016 European Championship. They parted ways again in October 2017.

After a break of almost a year, Storck found his way back into club football – but since then he has never stayed in office for longer than eleven months. First he trained Royal Mouscron and Cercle Brugge in Belgium, then he ventured into the Slovakian adventure with Dunajska Streda. This was followed by three further positions in Belgium with KRC Genk, KAS Eupen and KV Kortrijk – the latter of which he trained until June 2023.

From now on, Storck is on the sidelines in the sixth country of his coaching career and is supposed to get the two-time Romanian cup winner Sepsi OSK back on track. Most recently, the club remained winless eleven times under former Cottbus player Ovidiu Burcă.
