Benoît Paire’s Hopeful Path to the Australian Open: Maia Challenger Final

On vacation for ten days already before the start of the Maia Challenger, in Portugal, Benoît Paire made the right decision by finally participating in one of the last tournaments of the season on the secondary circuit.

Falling from his compatriot Maxime Janvier this Saturday (6−2, 7–5), the Avignonnais will play his fourth final this year in Challenger. Always with the objective of getting closer to the top 100, which he would have liked to fill sooner.

“I cannot enter the main draw of the Australian Open (January 14 to 28, editor’s note) because in the best case scenario, if I win this tournament, I would climb to 110th place in the ATP ranking (the cut being set at 104, editor’s note). All year round you have pressure to make points for the ranking, so I wanted to keep it simple here and have fun”declared Benoît in comments reported by Tennis Tourtalk.

In the event of success on Sunday against the local Nuno Borges (78th), the 34-year-old Frenchman will nevertheless be able to hope and wait for a few withdrawals to potentially enter the main draw of the Australian Open.
