Belgian Club’s European Success: A Look at Coefficients and Earnings

Stunts, disappointments and finally 3 clubs that hibernate. Our European representatives experienced a particularly fascinating group stage. What did that get them? An interim balance of the cents and coefficients.

Coefficient: excellently on target

Last year, Belgium scored its best coefficient ever as a football country and this year too our teams are on their way to doing a good thing.

Due to the wintering of 3 Belgian teams and the victories of Club Brugge, Genk and Union last night, our country increased its provisional total this season to 58 points (11,600).

It will be difficult to match or even improve on last year

(71 points, 14,200), but the recent performances of Belgian clubs in Europe ensure that our country remains in seventh place in the country rankings – on the basis of which European tickets are distributed.

Last year, countries such as Turkey and Scotland were still breathing down our necks, but Belgium is currently in a safe seventh place with a nice buffer.

Cents: already 50 million euros in prize money

The past European group stage was also particularly lucrative for our clubs in terms of money.

Not surprisingly, Antwerp collected the largest sum due to its Champions League participation. Downside: due to the disappointing results, the Great Old earned little extra money besides the ‘certain’ millions.

Only the unexpected stunt victory against Barcelona provides a hefty bonus of 2.8 million on the final match day.

Due to the last place in the group, base number 1 must already close its European financial year with a total of approximately 21.5 million.

Union has also already raised a nice amount of football in the Europa League: 6.93 million. In the Conference League they will have the opportunity to add some nice bonuses after the New Year.

The Conference League didn’t do our representatives any harm either.

Penalty: both Club Brugge (8.57 million) and KAA Gent (7.23 million) earned more money in the ‘lowest’ European competition than Union in the Europa League, thanks to the many match premiums earned.

Will both clubs soon be able to add some extra fuel to their bank accounts?

Unfortunately, that will no longer be possible at KRC Genk. The Limburgers conclude their European adventure with a check for 5.63 million euros.

* In the Europa and Conference League, the sum from the ‘market pool’ (the pot with television funds) has not yet been included because it is too uncertain.
