Barletta-Angri: a bittersweet Christmas, a new year as ultras

Classic midweek pre-Christmas Serie D match. It is played on Wednesday 20 December and by chance I find myself in Barletta where last year, in the same period, I had the opportunity to watch the derby between the home red and whites against Fasano, always in the middle of the week. Today at the “Puttilli” instead Angri arrives, in a very different football context but with unchanged and clement climatic conditions, which this year too offer pleasant sunshine.

I arrive a few minutes before the kick-off but just in time for the Angrese ultras to enter the stands. Welcome news for me are the grey-red ultras, having never seen them before except from the reports of my colleagues, in old magazines or in some videos found on the internet.

The division into two sections immediately catches the eye, the “Crazy Group” a little more secluded and on the other side the “ANGRESI”, an acronym that brings together various souls of Campania support who retain their activity and their individuality but have chosen this common path to give greater coherence and unity of purpose to the support for the Prancing Horse.

I spend a good part of the first half near their sector, the support they offer is in the vein of classic Italian cheering, continuous waving of flags, drums and voices that constantly lasts for the entire ninety minutes. Good slaps, choruses repeated and others sustained for several minutes. Really beautiful overall and despite seeing them for the first time with my own eyes, I am really impressed by their performance.

Heavy air instead in the Barletta house. I had been missing for a long time and it seems clear that the curve is no longer as sensationally packed as in the recent past. However, it must be repeated that we are faced with an uncomfortable midweek day, in which inevitably not everyone can be present; then we add the poor ranking, the discontent of a mediocre championship and a public that mostly feels betrayed, after having signed a blank check to the club with their trust, subscribing to over 2,700 season tickets. Overall, however, those who love the city and its colors are present this time too and quantitatively we remain well above the category averages, so hats off!

There is no lack of support either despite the fact that the field is once again a source of satisfaction. The team badly loses another match but they demonstrate all their attachment to the shirt and their ideals until the ninetieth minute. At the end of a match without appeals, the team is contested with the classic “go to work”, while various chants also target the owners to whom they expressly ask to pass the ball.

To underline, both in the Curva Nord and in the away sector, the most classic of Christmas banners for the banned players and for the ultras in general, a wish to which we too Sport People we unite ideally, with the hope that 2024 will be more suitable for ultras, with fewer restrictions and more freedom to cheer.

A final thank you to the guys from Angri for the chat and the stickers which I will jealously guard, with the hope of seeing them at work again as soon as possible during my wanderings around the stadiums.
